Caving With Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania Council 11-18-18

Yes, they were at it again. This time there were two new Troops to introduce to caving. Eastern PA Council set this one up at the same time as the one in October. This trip originally had sixteen people, but one Troop backed out at the last minute. It’s a shame because they missed a very good time with these girls. Maybe they’ll come out again when they can. We have been having a tremendous amount of rain and unprecedented snowfall for this time of year. As a result the cave actually had a good bit of water in it.

I like to use this cave for beginner trips because it is stable. But I’ve never seen this much water in this cave. Parts that usually have a little sticky mud had water over the top of my thigh. I choose to avoid the lower parts of the cave. For most of the girls this was their first wild caving trip. I didn’t want to take any chances with them and I didn’t want anyone cold and miserable. But they all got very muddy, and had a blast. How could I tell? Watch the video. L…

Caving with the Montco Community College Outdoor Club

One of the “groups” I’d like to spend more time taking caving is college students. The problem is that they are extremely busy, and always broke. But I can work with that. This is one of the joys of being a volunteer. Most of them can afford my rate. But getting the time scheduled is still tough.

The Outdoor Club at the Montgomery County Community College is a great group to do this with. First, my friend, Katrina Berry, was a student there and she made the introductions and arrangements. Second, well, they just like to get out and do adventurous activities.

Instead of babbling on, just watch the video to see what happened. And special thanks to Mike Shank from York Grotto, Alex and Sarah Diamond, and Bill LaPorte from Dragon Breath Grotto.

Caving With Venturing Crew 363

Gretchen has been caving with me since she first started Venturing at 14 years old. This is her Venturing Crew four years later. Some new and eager faces that have heard her stories and want to experience caving themselves.
By the time we travel the two hours, distribute gear and get ready, it’s almost noon by the time we get inside the cave entrance. Here we talk a little and refresh everyone on cave safety. We divided into two groups and went our separate ways to explore.
We must have had fun because it was four and a half hours till we exited the cave. The sun was setting and it was dark by the time we were ready to go get something to eat.

None of this would have happened without a little help from my friends. Special shout out to Gretchen Hartman, Bill LaPorte, Mike Shank, Daniel Diamond and Sarah Diamond. You guys are awesome.
